The Clubhouse

The Clubhouse

The Victoria Golf Club is nestled in the beautiful municipality of Oak Bay, in a heritage neighborhood lined with Garry Oaks and hanging flower baskets, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Blessed with a warm, dry microclimate that keeps our holes green and free of snow, we get to play golf year-round here.

Our heritage Clubhouse dates back to 1928 and is listed in the Canadian Register of Historic Places. While preserving all the character of its Tudor style, the Clubhouse has been fully renovated to offer all modern amenities, from an award-winning Pro Shop and Macan's Pub to HD widescreen TVs and wheelchair access. Walking through the front door, you are warmly greeted at reception and have an open-concept view of the Fireside Lounge and into Macan's Pub. Head outside to our outdoor patio and social fire pit, or continue through to Macan's for a drink at our stately, wrap-around bar. The recently-renovated Dining Room will stop you in your tracks with the floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the golf course, as well as our ceiling-high display of sommelier-selected wines. Travel downstairs and you will find our award-winning Pro Shop, filled with the latest in golf technology and apparel (and the nearby AboutGolf Simulator), or head down the hall towards our recently-renovated Men's & Women's Lounges for wood-paneled lockers, showers, and relaxing amenities.

History

The Victoria Golf Club, founded in 1893, is the oldest 18-hole golf course in Canada in its original location, and second oldest in North America. The course began as 14 holes but quickly expanded to 18 in 1895. There have been at least three different layouts - the one played today was finalized in the mid-1920s (after a decision in 1923 to end the practice of hitting tee shots on two holes across the ever-busier Beach Drive).

Our stately Clubhouse, completed in 1928 and is a registered Canadian Historic Place, has undergone a number of expansions and renovations (including the most recent in 1993) and provides a grand and comfortable venue to begin your own memories. When you walk through this storied building, you'll be reminded of a rich history of golf, companionship, and community that spans over generations. Perhaps one of the most obscure yet heartwarming examples is a series of photos of a foursome on the course, taken annually on the same date over five decades.

Golfing Legends

For more than a century, famous names have graced our course, including golfing greats Harry Vardon, Chick Evans, Byron Nelson, Joyce Wethered, Ben Hogan, Al Geiberger, Pat Bradley, George Knudson, Sam Snead, Dawn Coe-Jones and Johnny Miller, to name a few.

Numerous celebrities such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Wayne Gretzky, Pamela Anderson, Kiefer Sutherland, and, most recently, Alice Cooper have also been drawn to our seaside links throughout the years, not only to play but also to support charitable causes.

History continues to be made in the annual Victoria and Seattle GC interclub, a home and home-friendly that is the oldest international golf tournament in North America (since 1895). The Seniors North West Championship, representing players of various levels from the U.S. Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and Alberta, continues to be hosted by VGC (for 80+ years now).
